Updated 5 October 2026. This is a researched guide, not a hands-on performance test. Examples below are illustrative. Features and prices can change.
A free AI service can be enough for occasional questions or drafts. It is not necessarily a like-for-like replacement for a paid ChatGPT plan. Compare the task you need to finish, current access limits and the amount of checking required.
This is a researched shortlist, not a hands-on ranking.
Three options to investigate
| Service | Starting use | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | Try a text draft or explanation | Free plan limits and available tools |
| Microsoft Copilot | General questions and web-based tasks | Which consumer or Microsoft 365 product you are using |
| Perplexity | Find sources to investigate | Whether each cited source supports the answer |
Claude’s plan guide includes a limited free plan. Microsoft’s comparison distinguishes free Copilot from Copilot features in Microsoft 365. For Perplexity, check its help centre and the limits shown in your account. Do not assume a model name or quota from an old review is still current.
A fair comparison exercise
Choose one task you already understand. Give each service the same instruction and source facts. Use made-up or public information. For example: “Summarise these notes into five actions. Do not invent owners or dates.”
Score the result on accuracy, missing information and editing effort. Also note whether a usage limit interrupts the task. A service that produces the longest answer is not automatically the most useful.
For research, check citations yourself
A cited answer can still misread a source, use an old page or link to a page that does not support the claim. Open the original source and check its date. For product features, prefer the provider’s own help or plan page.
Free access versus a free trial
Free access can have ongoing limits. A trial may end and renew as a paid subscription. Check whether a payment method is required, the trial end date and the cancellation steps. Do not enter payment details merely to compare a basic task.
When paying may make sense
Pay when a repeated task is blocked by a limit or needs a specific included feature. First confirm that the paid plan actually addresses that problem. Buying several subscriptions before learning one workflow can add cost and confusion.
Our recommendation
Try one free option on your real type of work, with safe sample data. Keep a simple comparison record. If it meets your needs, there is no reason to upgrade for the sake of it. If it does not, read our ChatGPT free-versus-paid decision guide. All provider links here are non-affiliate links.
