Grammarly vs QuillBot: Proofreading or Rephrasing?

Updated 5 October 2026. This is a researched guide, not a hands-on performance test. Examples below are illustrative. Features and prices can change.

Choose a writing tool according to the change you need. If you want help reviewing language as you write, investigate Grammarly. If your main task is trying alternative wording for an existing passage, investigate QuillBot’s paraphraser. In either case, check that the meaning stays the same.

This guide uses Grammarly’s product information and QuillBot’s paraphraser guide. It does not report a head-to-head accuracy test.

A meaning-preservation example

Original: “The supplier expects the parts next week, but the arrival date is not confirmed.”

Acceptable rewrite: “The parts may arrive next week. The supplier has not confirmed the date.”

Incorrect rewrite: “The parts will arrive next week.”

These are illustrative examples, not outputs captured from either tool. The last sentence changes an expectation into a promise. It should be rejected even if it sounds smoother.

Run a small comparison

  1. Pick three passages you wrote and remove private information.
  2. Keep the original beside each revised version.
  3. Check names, figures, uncertainty and technical terms.
  4. Count changes you accept and changes you reject.
  5. Record the time needed to reach a final version.

If you spend longer correcting a rewrite than editing the original, change the process. You do not have to use every feature a tool offers.

Cost and availability

Review Grammarly’s plans and QuillBot’s upgrade details for current limits and billing. Check the app or extension you need. An old review’s annual price or allowance may no longer apply.

Use rephrasing responsibly

Changing words does not make another person’s ideas yours. Cite sources when required. Do not use paraphrasing to hide plagiarism or bypass academic rules. An AI detector score is not reliable proof of authorship, and this page does not promise detector evasion.

Recommendation

Start with the task, then trial the available features. Keep the original meaning and your own judgement. Our Grammarly review covers a buying checklist, while our editing guide explains a tool-independent process.
