Updated 5 October 2026. This is a researched guide, not a hands-on performance test. Examples below are illustrative. Features and prices can change.
MiniMax develops AI models and products for different tasks. Before comparing it with ChatGPT, identify the product you need. A coding tool, an audio service and a developer API are not the same purchase.
We do not have a like-for-like cost study that supports that claim. We also do not claim to have personally tested MiniMax across writing, coding and video.
What MiniMax offers
The official MiniMax site lists language, video, speech and music models, alongside products such as MiniMax Code, Design and Audio. Availability, limits and billing can differ across these services. A feature advertised for one model does not mean that every app includes it.
Choose the right comparison
| Your task | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Write or summarise text | The user-facing app, output quality and limits |
| Build software using an API | Model, input/output charges, reliability and integration work |
| Create a voiceover | Audio quality, pronunciation, usage allowance and voice rights |
| Create a video | Accepted inputs, output length, failed attempts and commercial terms |
For an API, a token is a small piece of text used for counting usage. It is not a month of unlimited use. Comparing a per-token API rate with a monthly consumer subscription can give a misleading “cheaper” result.
A five-task trial you can repeat
Use made-up or public information. Keep the same instructions for each service you compare:
- Summarise a short public document and list details that are missing.
- Rewrite a customer email without changing its dates or promises.
- Turn meeting notes into an action list without inventing owners.
- Explain a topic you already understand so you can spot mistakes.
- Repeat the task where the first answer was weakest.
Record whether the answer is correct, how much editing it needs, how long the task takes and any usage cost. Do not score a fluent answer as accurate without checking it. These steps are a proposed evaluation method, not test results.
Budget for the whole job
If you build through an API, include repeated prompts, output, retries, storage and your development time. If you use a subscription, check what is included and what needs additional credits. Keep a spending limit until you understand the bill.
For creative work, count rejected outputs too. A low price per generation can still produce a costly finished project if you need many attempts.
Risks to check
Review data handling before uploading business information. Check rights before using a person’s voice, photo or logo. Confirm commercial-use terms for the exact product. A realistic generated voice should not be used to impersonate someone without permission.
Who should try it?
MiniMax is worth investigating if one of its specific services matches your task and you can evaluate the result. A beginner who only needs occasional writing help should compare a simple consumer app first. A developer should test error handling and spending controls before connecting a live business process.
Start from the official product directory, read the current plan details and run a small trial.
